Panel Abstract
Modern slavery (including forced labour, forced marriage, and human trafficking) is a significant global challenge, and one which is intensifying because of the impact of other global challenges, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, poverty, conflict displacement, natural hazards, gender inequality, and climate change. It also impacts existing, new and intensifying global challenges, including combatting the effects of climate change and limiting global temperature rises; ensuring sustainable development and ending poverty; safeguarding ecological survival and diversity; and achieving gender equality. Our panel of papers considers the evidence from research into these intersecting challenges, and discusses some possible evidence-based solutions. Lumley-Sapanski considers the connected challenges posed by conflict (and other forms of) displacement and modern slavery. McCabe explores the intersecting relationships between forced marriage, modern slavery and human trafficking and how this leads to an exacerbation of exploitation. Musunga discusses the impact of Covid-19 on survivors of human trafficking, and what we can learn about better support for survivors. Yore discusses the relationship between climate change, increasing natural hazards, and vulnerability to modern slavery. Altogether, the panel brings together perspectives from the Global North and the Global South, as well as from academics (at different stages of their careers) and practitioners.
